The latest biotechnology applications in the fields of health and medicine, food security and agriculture, and environment will be featured in the 10th Biotechnology Week which will run from November 24-28, 2014.

With the theme, “Edukasyon sa Bioteknolohiya: Pagyamanin para sa Kinabukasan Natin”, the National Biotechnology Week is an annual event organized by Departments of Science and Technology, Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources, Education, Health, Interior and Local Government, and Trade and Industry and Commission on Higher Education as this year’s lead agency.

SCOPE OF THE COMPETITION

The competition is open to all Filipino scientists, researchers, and engineers from universities and colleges, R&D institutions, and private industries doing R&D work in the following categories:

ELIGIBILITY

The competition is open to all Filipino scientists, researchers, and engineers from universities and colleges, R&D institutions and private industries doing R&D within the PCIEERD sectoral coverage

MECHANISM

• The research and development project should have been conducted mainly in the Philippines and completed between January 2010 and December 2014
• Entries should be submitted not later than February 27, 2015
• Entries to the award are made by submitting the details of the completed project following the prescribed format
• It should be certified by the Head of the institution / agency / organization as to the veracity of its claims

• All entries will be treated with utmost confidentiality

PRIZES

A winner from each category (1) Industrial Technology, (2) Energy, Utilities & Systems (3) Emerging Technology, and (4) Special Concerns will receive a trophy and a cash prize amounting to P500, 000.00 (net of tax).

Submission of entries should be in the prescribed format

General Instructions: Must be submitted in five (5) copies using Arial 11 font, 1.5 spacing and A4 size bond paper, and should have a maximum of 25 pages including figures and tables. Electronic copy (in CD) in PDF format should also be submitted.

Specific instructions: The articles include a discussion on how the research satisfies the Criteria and should contain the following:

1. Executive Summary – one-page, single-spaced, should contain discussion on impact/contribution of the research to national development and claims on originality
2. Title – Research and Development (R&D) title
3.  Author – full name and affiliation of author/s
4. Abstract – one page, 1.5 spacing, not more than 350-word summary encompassing the highlight of results of the project
5. Introduction – an overview of the state-of-the-art regarding the R&D undertaken, the significance and the statement of the problem
6. Review of Literature – relevant literature and other technical works related to the research
7. Scientific basis/framework – state-of-the-art technology / information from which the project takes-off
8. Objectives – statement of the specific purpose to address the problem areas which the project intends to solve
9. Materials and Methods – procedures involved, the materials used, sampling procedures, statistical analysis, methodology, and others including scope and limitation, time (seasonality), and place of study
10. Results and Discussion – data gathered, analysis, and interpretation of results supported by tables, graphs, pictures, maps, etc. including the comparison of targeted actual research and development output
11. Summary and Conclusion – the result in brief and the generalization derived from the investigation based on evidence shown
12. Implications
    1. Immediate or potential impact to national economy
    2. Mature technologies for dissemination / potential for business incubation
    3. Research and development breakthrough
    4. Result for policy and planning, formulation and implementation
13. Recommendations
    1. Findings / results that need further verification
    2. Result that can be formulated as a solution to a specific problem
14. Literature Cited – references listed alphabetically by author/s. Each source shall follow the following format: author/s, year, title, edition (if source is a book),place of publication, publisher (or name of journal, if article), page number (if it is an article)
15. Recognition/Awards Received, Papers Published Related to the Project
16. Acknowledgement – indicate key persons, institution(s), and other entities that contributed to the completion of the R&D.
17. Curriculum Vitae (CV) – maximum of three (3) pages should be included, as an attachment to the paper

CRITERIA

In line with the celebration of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Science and Technology Fair (RSTF) at the Visayas Cluster, the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) conducted an Information Education and Communication (IEC) at Mandaue City, Cebu last October 3, 2014. The event is part of PCIEERD’s initiative to strengthen Science and Technology (S&T) in the country through information dissemination of results from S&T based research projects involving technologies that have undergone Technology Assessment of the Council. 

Considered to be the first of its kind to happen in Asia is a collaborative multidisciplinary research project among three countries - Japan, Thailand and the Philippines addressing regional and global issues on functional nanocarbon-based catalysts for a unified goal of developing a biomass-centered economy in Asia.

The collaborative project in the field of functional materials is under the framework of the e-ASIA Joint Research Project (e-ASIA JRP) in accelerating science and technology research exchange and collaboration in the East Asian region. It aims to strengthen research and development capabilities towards resolution of shared challenges across the region, including those associated with environmental protection, natural disaster mitigation and infectious diseases prevention. As part of this objective, the e-ASIA JRP intends to support collaborative research implemented among three or more of the member countries in agreed fields of research. The overarching goal of e-ASIA JRP is to contribute to economic and human resource development, as well as the resolution of various challenges in the East Asian region.
