fabian dayrit on nanotechnology

Dr. Fabian M. Dayrit presenting the nanotechnology roadmap.

The Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST- PCIEERD) conducted a Focus Group Discussion on the Update of the Philippine Nanotechnology Roadmap on March 26, 2015 at the DOST Executive Lounge, Bicutan, Taguig City.

Attended by representatives from the industry, academe and government, the event intended to gather insights and suggestions of the key players in the growth and development of the nanotechnology sector in the Philippines.

In her opening message Dr. Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, the DOST Undersecretary for S&T Services and the Officer-in-charge of PCIEERD, said that the DOST crafted the nanotechnology roadmap in 2009. This was the earliest initiative of the DOST in shaping an industry in nanotechnology.

Dr. Fabian M. Dayrit of the Department of Chemistry, Ateneo de Manila University presented the nanotechnology roadmap. The discussions included the determination of the nanotechnology research tracks and the categorization of ongoing and completed projects. The participants were also divided into their respective subsectors —semiconductors, food and agriculture and chemicals -- in break-out sessions, to further discuss nanotechnology applications in their fields. It was recommended by the participants that the nanotechnology efforts of the coming years will be focused on addressing the needs of society, solving the problems of the country and focusing on a niche.

The event was concluded by the integration of Dr. Imee Su Martinez of the Institute of Chemistry, UP Diliman and a closing remark by USec. Amelia P. Guevara. (Janina Myn Villapando)
