In its resolve to recognize the completed research works of Filipino scientists, researchers and engineers in the industry, energy, emerging technology and special concerns like climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and management and environment, the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development institutionalized its Search for Outstanding R&D. The search was announced last year during the council’s anniversary celebration in June. To encourage researchers to present their research works, PCIEERD offered a prize of P500,000 for each category, and “winner–take-all” scheme to emphasize the objective of awarding outstanding research.

A total of 45 entries were received for the four categories which were narrowed down to 3-5 finalists per category during the research work presentations which were conducted from March to June 2015.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) resolved to respond to the country's pressing problem on poverty alleviation through a technology-based holistic approach -from providing sustainable livelihood, provision of the basic need for potable water and creating a sound and healthy environment. On the whole, this approach advocates the need for science and technology interventions as the only way to go for a better quality of life.

Zeroing in on initiatives for a healthy environment, the newly-developed portable eco-friendly septic system enhanced with organominerals (OM) for disaster areas as part of rehabilitation activities has also found application in condominiums, other housing projects and now in hotels and areas where wastewater treatment is a problem.

With its commitment to support the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) advocacy to facilitate innovation and provide assistance in boosting Research and Development initiatives in the country, the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) successfully facilitated the department's first pitching event for DOST-funded technologies last April 25, 2015 at the University of the Philippines Diliman's Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (UP-EEEI). The event was orchestrated in collaboration with Dr. Luis Sison, project leader of the DOST-UP Enterprise Center for Technopreneurship.

Another milestone for a distinguished Filipino scientist was achieved by being recognized as the 2015 Plinius Medallist awardee by the prominent European Geosciences Union (EGU), the first Southeast Asian winner to be conferred with the medal.

Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay, Executive Director of the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (NOAH), once again proved that the country's current practice in disaster risk reduction (DRR) is of international standards as he received the 2015 Plinius Medal from the EGU. He received the medal last April 15, 2015 in Vienna Austria.

The Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST- PCIEERD) conducted a Focus Group Discussion on the Update of the Philippine Nanotechnology Roadmap on March 26, 2015 at the DOST Executive Lounge, Bicutan, Taguig City.

Attended by representatives from the industry, academe and government, the event intended to gather insights and suggestions of the key players in the growth and development of the nanotechnology sector in the Philippines.
