International Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management under the e-ASIA Joint Research Program and Typhoon Yolanda related J-RAPID Program

Purpose

Natural disasters have significant impacts on our lives and economies. In order to minimize damage caused by disasters, it is important to implement effective measures based on various information such as observational data, research results, and local information. This workshop consists of 2 parts, one for the e-ASIA JRP(*1) and the other for the J-RAPID Program(*2), and will provide researchers with an excellent opportunity to promote exchange of their research activities, share information, and discuss potential international collaborative research. The findings from the J-RAPID program, most recently implemented in the Philippines following the devastation caused by Typhoon Yolanda, will contribute to the rehabilitation of affected regions and also the improvement of measures for disaster risk reduction.

(*1) e-ASIA JRP

The e-ASIA Joint Research Program was officially inaugurated in 2012 with the objective to develop a vibrant and collaborative Science and Technology research community to promote innovation, resolve shared challenges in the East Asian region, and contribute to the region's economic development. 16 Member Organizations from 12 countries have participated in the program (as of March 2015). It is expected that the opportunity provided by this workshop will accelerate international joint research within the framework of the e-ASIA JRP and that eventual research outcomes will contribute to the implementation of effective disaster management and promotion of international cooperation to reduce disaster risk.

(*2) J-RAPID Program

The J-RAPID Program of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) is dedicated to support urgent collaborative research/investigation activities between Japanese and foreign researchers in response to natural or anthropogenic disasters and similar unanticipated events. This program has been launched 3 times so far, first in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, second in response to the Thai flooding disaster and this time in response to Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines. JST immediately started communication with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines after the typhoon hit, and as a result, 11 Philippine – Japan research/survey projects have been funded since April 2014.
